Harold Wilson’s famous remark that a week is a long time in politics feels rather quaint now. Events move so fast these days that yesterday seems an eternity ago. The party conference season has lasted a mere three weeks but it was a different world when it began.

Take tax for a start. At the first of the conferences the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, thought the smart thing to do was to reverse his party’s policy and promise tax cuts at the next election.
